Mulberry Street Pizza, San Rafael CA

RRC recently sold Mulberry Street Pizza in San Rafael which has been a family owned business for over 30 years to Bill Capetanos, a local, who will be continuing Mulberry’s quality tradition.  Bill will not make any major changes to the operation and will only be enhancing the operation by making a few aesthetic changes as well as expanding the operating hours, opening an additional day weekly and adding delivery service. Bill was formerly with Pacific Pulmonary Services for almost 18 years and held management positions in procurement and leasing and was most recently Executive Director of Finance and Operations.

The former owner Ted Rowe, purchased Mulberry Street in 1986. The original owner created the restaurant for his children. He was from New York and named Mulberry Street after the famous street in New York’s Little Italy.

The original restaurant on Redwood Highway was too small and Ted moved to the current location in 1992. The menu expanded from a simple salad and several pizzas as their guests began requesting their favorites over and over. Ted’s dad made the Hal’s Pizza from his favorite meats. Ted created the Cajun Sausage and Andouille with Milan Salami (family owned in Oakland) and the Three Beer Pizza was born. The Greek Pizza was a collaboration with the Musco Olive Company (family owed in Tracy). They still don’t know the recipe for the secret Musco spices used to marinate the green olives on that pizza.

Ted’s passion for creating new items for the menu expanded to lasagna and pasta. He couldn’t offer just one dressing for the salad so he created the Blue Cheese and Thousand Island with variations from his mother’s own recipes. His love for Caesar Salad produced another new dressing. As the Rowe children were growing up, their fondness for Ranch dressing led to a three year journey that produced our current recipe. It was the same with the addition of the soups. The Cream of Tomato with a Hint of Curry and the Cream of Mushroom have cult followings.

After 30 years in Marin they feel a strong connection to the community and Bill, the new owner, will perpetuate the Mulberry tradition of making guests feel at home.
